Department of Nematology, College of Agriculture, OUAT, Bhubaneswar is first of its kind in the country among the State Agriculture Universities to introduce Post Grduate teaching programme  in the year 1972 with the mandate of triple functions - teaching, research and extension activities. The Department offered two courses of Nematology in B.Sc. (Ag.) curriculum in the year 1975. The Department is also imparting Ph.D. programme in course credit system since 1999. Subsequently the Nematology course was introduced in Under Graduate studies at College of Agriculture, Chiplima in the year 1981, Department of Forestry Bhubaneswar during 1991, College of Horticulture, Chiplima during 2008 and College of Agriculture, Bhawanipatna during the year 2009. A research project is going on AICRP on Nematode, ICAR Scheme.


  • Teaching :
* The Department offers high standard Nematology programme in Undergraduate, Post graduate and Ph.D. level at par with leading University of the Country and abroad.
* This is the only University in the Country to open Post graduate programme in Nematology  in th year 1972.  
* Till date 17 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree and 145 students have been awarded  M.Sc. (Ag.) Nematology degree.
* At present three Ph.D. &  Five P.G. students are in roll.
* The teachers of the Department are actively engaged in Counselling the students for JRF & SRF.
* P.G. & Ph.D. Students passing out of this Department are well placed in Academic Institutions, Nationalised Banks, State Government of Odisha, Pesticide Companies, ICAR Institute & abroad.

  • Research :
* Association of emportant Phytoparasitic nematodes in different crops have been identifed, and the extant of yield losses have been estimated.
* Burrowing nematode of banana causing black head and toppling disease have been reported by Mahanty et al (1991).
* Low cost management packages and IPM modules cowprising of resistant varieties, soil solarilization, Cropping sequence, biopesticides and various soil and land  management practices have been developed for emportant plant parasitic nematodes.

  • Extension :
* The staff of this Department from time to time undertake various technical programme in All India Radio, Door Darshan & V- Sat programme pertaining to general awarness and management of plant parasitic nematodes.
* The Department people impart different in service training programme on various aspects of plant nematode interaction to the field level extension officers,plant protection officers as well other technical personel on nematode management practices.
* The staff members also very often linked under farmer’s scientist interaction programme conducted by the University.
* Technical materials relating to nematode management in different crops in the ‘Manual for Agricultural extension officers’ are contributed by the staff members of this Department.
